WALTER H. FISCHER, 73, of BERKELEY, died Friday, Oct. 8, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  He worked for 22 years for A&P, Bayville, retiring in 1978 as manager.  He then owned and operated Walt's Butcher Van, Lavallette, for many years and worked for Freehold Regional High School District as a maintenance supervisor before retiring in 1993.  He continued to work part-time in maintenance for Simply Skin Day Spa, Toms River.

Mr. Fischer was a corporal in the Korean War, serving from 1952 to 1954. He was an active member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church,  Manchester. Mr. Fischer was a lifetime member of the Laurelton Fire Co., Brick, and member of the Holiday City Fishing Club. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, painting, home repair projects, vegetable and flower gardening, and traveling. The real love of his life was his family. Born in Union City, he lived in Brick for 34 years before moving to Toms River in 1994.

He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Marie Fischer. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lillian Alling Fischer; two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter R. and Cindy of Manchester, and Gary Blaine and Patty of Brick; three daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and Larry Juralewicz, Barbara and Billy Harnes, and Heidi and Gene Janick, all of Manchester; a brother, Leo of Secaucus; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Route 70, Manchester. Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday at the church, with interment to follow at the Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
